“Whilst with PrettyLittleThing I’ve been able to explore what it is that I want from the company as an developer.”

  • Why did you apply to work for us?

I’ve had quite a colourful career before PLT, with just a few of my past roles being; circus teacher, performer, youth worker, and teaching assistant. Unfortunately, this kind of lifestyle can lead to injuries, and I was faced with task of having to completely regear my career. Retraining in your 30s makes you feel like Chandler Bing quitting his job to become and advertising intern, it’s brutal. PLT offered a rare combination of highly-versatile learning pathways, the opportunity to move throughout the company, and an insane amount of perks that are just a nice bonus.

I applied to PLT because it became quickly obvious that they were going to be my best chance to completely retrain, and therefore refocus my life, whilst still being able to pay rent and enjoy a quality of life. This is rare in the current job market, so I’m thrilled I landed the job.

  • What’s the best thing about working for us?

The support structure. No question feels too stupid, everyone approaches the work as if they’re still learning, and no-one is made to feel ostractised due to a lack of experience or uncertainty. Whilst with PLT I’ve been able to explore what it is that I want from the company as an apprentice and employee, and the means to support that has then been provided after open discussion. It’s a very progressive way of working and training, I wish more companies were like this.

  • How would you describe the culture?

Like no other job I’ve worked in, and I lived on a circus site in Germany for a year. It’s relaxed, fun-loving, collaborative. The mood in the office matches the bright pink on the walls.

  • How did you find the application and interview process?

Long, these roles can be super competitive, so they have to make sure you definitely want it. However, despite the length of the process, it was a very casual and supportive process. Even the final stage interview was pitched as an ‘informal chat’. It’s a great inidicator of what the work culture is like. This also put me at a lot of ease. PLT was only my third interview within the tech industry, so the fact that they made it as unintimidating and approachable as possible was a huge relief.

  • What advice would you give to applicants looking to apply?

Be honest, and be yourself. This is entry level, you’re not expected to know everything. Effectively, it’s your potential that’s assessed, not your pre-existing skills. The latter advice is just because this is a very large fashion company, the more of yourself you show and the more of your quirks you let shine, the more likely you are to fit into the culture.

  • What advice would you give to applicants preparing for interview/Assessment Centre?

Read the job description! Even if you don’t meet it all, try and get a point for everything on there, even if the examples aren’t related to the industry in question. Also, very important, back up all your answers with evidence (google STAR).

  • Have you been offered any training, networking, workshops etc (internal or external)?

The first 13 weeks of my role is an intensive coding bootcamp. I am up to my neck in training, networking, and workshops.

  • What’s been your biggest achievement/proudest moment so far?

Outside of this job, I perform as a stand-up comedian in a double-act. In 2018 we performed our first hour-long show at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and then took it on a self-funded DIY tour around the UK (effectively, pretended we were a band). My proudest achievement is that this potentially misguided project somehow broke even, got us in front of new audiences in fantastic venues, all off our own back.

  • What makes someone successful here?

The confidence to ask for help when it’s needed. There’s a lot to be said for admitting you need help rather than wasting everyone’s time trying to figure it out yourself.

  • What do you think makes us unique as an employer?

PLT care about it’s employees, I’ve not met anyone who feels disposable. That’s a mean feat in a company this size.

  • Why should top talent join us instead of a competitor?

You feel looked after here. Not just with the work culture, but also with the various perks, benefits, and little suprises PLT like to provide us with.
