“When they say ‘people make a place’ it really is true, and this plays a huge part in making this a great place to work. ”

  • Why did you apply to work for us?

I was headhunted by a recruiter for my current position, but I was eager to join the boohoo group due to the number of brands within the portfolio, meaning there would be a lot of career opportunities. The fast-paced nature of the business is an environment in which I thrive, as well as the opportunity to create products for a brand I am personally very passionate about, made this the ideal role for me.

  • What’s the best thing about working for us?

The company offers an extensive benefits package with the highlights being an annual bonus and opportunity to invest in the share scheme, which is a great way to grow your savings and makes you feel rewarded as part of the boohoo family. When they say ‘people make a place’ it really is true, and this plays a huge part in making this a great place to work.

  • How would you describe the culture?

We have a great culture; every team member is approachable and it’s a very supportive environment. The office is really relaxed and although we work hard, we do have fun as well.

  • What do you get up to in your role? What makes it different compared with other similar roles you’ve had?

I am responsible for buying the loungewear, swimwear, nightwear and lingerie ranges. This consists of analysing the latest trends to develop a commercial offer for our customer and maximising best sellers. Working with suppliers globally and looking for ways to build our supply base and improve our product offer. I work closely with merchandising to manage options and intake, studio and e-commerce teams to determine how we want the product shot and presented on the site.

Compared to other companies we are quite a small buying team so there are lots of opportunities to develop quicker as you’ll have more responsibilities than a heavily structured company. When travel is permitted the company encourages all team members to go on buying trips – as an Assistant Buyer I had the opportunity to go to China, Athens and Turkey which was an incredible opportunity to develop my skills and confidence and not always available to more junior members in other organisations.

For me, working across four different areas makes my role and skillset so diverse. We also have a lot more freedom to shape the ranges how we like and trusted by senior management to drive this.

  • How has your career developed since you’ve worked here? E.g. development opportunities, role changes?

I’ve been at Nasty Gal for almost three years - I started as an entry level Assistant Buyer and got promoted to Junior Buyer after two years even during the pandemic. My Buyer has since gone on maternity leave, allowing me to step up and take ownership of four departments and I’m now managing two other team members which is an exciting opportunity for my development.

  • What’s been your biggest achievement/proudest moment so far?

Loungewear achieving number 1 category throughout SS20 and the way the team and I pulled together to secure intake to deliver these sales whilst adjusting to new ways of working. Being trusted to take over four departments as a Junior Buyer is a real proud moment for me, I didn’t think I would have this level of responsibility at this point in my career and I’m excited for what the next 6-12 months will look like.

  • What makes someone successful here?

Having the drive for your own development, being passionate about the brand and product and being a team player are all qualities that will make you successful in this business. Working hard, going the extra mile and using your initiative will make you stand out and your development will be supported by senior management. You must be agile to work in fast fashion as the market and demand fluctuates rapidly, you need to react quickly and manage accordingly.

  • What do you think makes us unique as an employer?

Being part of the ‘boohoo family’ gives you a real sense of inclusivity, the variety of brands within the portfolio provides a lot of diversity and opportunities for development internally. The social aspects and rewards make you feel valued and part of the family.

  • Describe working here in 3 words.

    Collaborative, challenging, rewarding.
